Black screen..help

I am trying to fix my brother in law's computer and he keeps getting an error saying that the fan has failed. We got a new fan and installed it. The error is still occuring, We then called up Dell's crappy customer service and they said it is either the fan or the motherboard. Since I am on his computer typing this message it isnt the motherboard and the fan we installed hooks up different. Is there anyway to fix this and turn it off. Another thing that is occuring is the computer will only run if its in OS mode. What could be causing this?
